Make a New Year's Kilt-o-lution

New Year's Day 1-1-11

Ok so the word kilt-o-lution doesn't roll of the tongue, but it part of my attitude to wear my Utility Kilts more often while doing routine things like going to Lowe's or the grocery store. And why not right? I look at my lovely Kilts hanging in my wardrobe and I try to plan when I can wear them again--as if I'm waiting for a special concert or gallery exhibit etc. No more. I'm resolved to show my knees and proudly wear my MUG.

Recently I was in Lowe's and a man was there with his two young daughters. You learn to recognize that quiet, curious look and suppressed giggles. I said hello to them and smiled remembering when a girl told he mother that that guy (me) was wearing a skirt....so I said quietly to these two girls that, "It's called a Kilt." Later at the grocery store a man walked up to me and said in a thick Scottish brogue, "I like yeehr Kilt." He was wearing a Scottish wool cap and had teeth of all colors, some gold and a knowing smile. He said that Kilts have come a long way since he first got his Tartan back 60 years ago.

I live in southwestern New Mexico and we don't have a lot of Scotts so that was cool. Speaking of which we are also lucky that in the middle of winter we are sunny and in upper 50's most days. It does get cold though and when that chilly wind cuts through my kilt I shiver. Been wearing my Doc Martens mostly with thick, slightly rolled down socks. I definitely need to get some other boots, maybe in black. My knee length moccasins make my legs too hot and they are suede so get dirty fast.

Well resolve to wear your modern or traditional Kilt any way you want and any time you want. I'm trying to normalize my Utility Kilts in a place where most people wear Wranglers, Cowboy boots and Western shirts so if I can do it you can toooo.
